Christian Island Lighthouse Founded by French Jesuits in 1639, Saint-Marie among the Hurons was the first European settlement in Ontario and served as a fortified base for missionaries working near present-day Midland.

On December 27, 1858, Griffith Island Lighthouse became the third of the six Imperial Towers to be formally placed in operation, exhibiting a fixed white light from a third-order Fresnel lens at a focal plane of 130 feet above the bay. The tower stood eighty five feet tall, and the light helped many a mariner locate the entrance to Owen Sound.

On September 22, 1937, the Cat Island Lighthouse was discontinued due to the greatly diminishing number of vessels using the Sound. Word was sent out from the Coast Guard Headquarters that the Federal government had placed the Cat Island Lighthouse for sale by sealed bid. The structure continued to remain sitting idle and abandoned.

The Christian Island Lighthouse was decommissioned on April 1, 1922. During WWII, the lighthouse lantern room was torn down, and its iron was used for the war effort. A light beacon was put on the lighthouse by the Canadian Coast Guard in 1965. The lantern room was re-established on top of the lighthouse at the turn of the century, returning it.
